Toyota Motor Corp announced today that it is recalling 57,000 vehicles that carry a potentially deadly airbag inflator manufactured by Takata Corp. In some instances, the airbag inflators can explode with too much force, spraying metal fragments into the car. Toyota’s action follows a recall by rival Honda Motor Co. for the same problem two weeks ago after revelations of a fifth death, in Malaysia, linked to Takata’s airbag inflator.

U.S. safety regulators are calling for Takata to issue a nationwide recall of these airbags and have given the company a Tuesday deadline to comply.
