Toyota Recalls 57,000 vehicles globally for airbag issue

Takata-logoToyota Motor Corp announced today that it is recalling 57,000 vehicles that carry a potentially deadly airbag inflator manufactured by Takata Corp. In some instances, the airbag inflators can explode with too much force, spraying metal fragments into the car. Toyota’s action follows a recall by rival Honda Motor Co. for the same problem two weeks ago after revelations of a fifth death, in Malaysia, linked to Takata’s airbag inflator.

U.S. safety regulators are calling for Takata to issue a nationwide recall of these airbags and have given the company a Tuesday deadline to comply.

With the memory of recent GM and Toyota recalls fresh in our minds as some of the largest auto recalls in history, a recent recall of Takata air bags may trump those recall numbers. “More than 14 million vehciles have been recalled by 11 automakers over rupture risks involving air bags manufactured by the supplier, Takata. That is about five times the number of vehicles recalled this year by General Motors for its deadly ignition switch defect,” states a recent article from the NY Times.

Toyota will replace parts used in some “hatchbacks, named Volts in Japan and Corolla and Corolla Matrix overseas, produced between 2001 and 2004”. The company said that the control unit of the vehicles airbags could be damaged by minor electrical noise, and could open wrong in the worst case scenario.
Two crashes maybe linked to the recall, no deaths have been reported.

2013 GMC Recall of 68,000 Vehicles

According to VehicleServicePros.com, General Motors is recalling more than 68,000 new SUV’s, pickups and vans that could roll away after being parked.

The article goes on report that the company is recalling “2013 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban and Tahoe; and GMC Savana, Sierra HD, Sierra LD, Yukon and Yukon XL because they may not meet a federal requirement on transmission shift interlocks.” Luckily, the majority of the vehicles affected are believed not to be sold yet, and are sitting in dealer lots or in transit to dealers.

No crashes or injuries have been reported. All the vehicles being recalled were built between November and December 2012.
