Car Accident? What do I do first?
Posted August 12, 2013 by Matthew
Car accidents can be traumatic experiences, and it’s not always clear what should be done first. Call the police? Exchange insurance information? Go to the hospital to get checked out?
Determine Injuries or Damage
Determine if you have suffered any injuries. Your adrenaline may still be rushing at this point, so you may not notice back or neck pain right away. Be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor for the same day to assess any injuries or pain.
Assess the damage of the automobiles involved. Take pictures!
File a Car Accident Report
Even in minor accidents, it’s important to take proper legal steps. File an accident report. Do not leave the scene until the police have filed a full report.
Exchange Information
Be sure to record the license plate number, description of vehicles, names, addresses, phone numbers and insurance information of everyone involved.
Call your Insurance Agent
If possible, call your insurance company at the scene. Sometimes the police are able to provide a more detailed report of the accident to your insurance company, which will help to expedite your claim.
Call American Auto Body
Many people don’t realize that they are not limited to auto body shops that are referred by their insurance company. Shop around! Find an auto body company that will offer you a free loaner car while your car is being repaired, offers competitive prices and has the experience and dedication necessary to repair your car in a timely manner.
